We are proud to announce our selection as Best of Gwinnett for 2011 in the category of Best Local Charity. Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers for making this possible – but more so for helping drive our organization to being worthy of this honor. Founders Justin Hutchinson and Kevin Ford are excited to receive this award less than 3 years from inception of the organization.

“We’re honored by being selected for this award. It’s amazing to see what we’ve accomplished in such short time and recognition like this gives us further inspiration to grow our impact in the community,” says Hutchinson.

Ford adds, “With our rapidly increasing impact in Gwinnett and surrounding counties, we are reminded not just how far we’ve come, but how much further we have to go. We can create, build, and grow a terrific organization, but it takes people to continue making that dream a reality- and for those people we are very appreciative.”

Kingdom Kids recently announced their donations exceeding $300,000 to local families and organizations in just under 3 years.

The week was full of fun activities like parasailing, shopping, swimming, pedicures but when she arrived home she was very tired and had an unexplained fever which returned the following day. After a trip to the the ER and confirming very low blood counts Jessi was transported by ambulance to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta where it was confirmed that Jessi had AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). On November 25th, Jessi was called home to be with God.

Jessi always wanted to help others. She always said when she became cancer free she wanted to visit other children with cancer and encourage them. Jessi’s dream was to “Pay it Forward” to help grant wishes for these other children. Please join us for a day of helping Jessi’s wish come true and granting wishes for more children facing challenging circumstances.

Lily’s Run is back and better than ever! Lily Anderson and Kingdom Kids are once again partnering to grant wishes for some very special kiddos! Kingdom Kids is honored to support Bo, McKenna, Sarah, Will, and Jackson for this year’s event!

Lily

In September 2009 Lily was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer that came in the form a large tumor in her abdomen. By the time they found it, the cancer had also spread to her bones and bone marrow. Lily endured several rounds of chemotherapy, surgeries, a stem cell transplant, radiation, and anti-body therapy. She completed her treatment in October 2010 and earlier this year a scan showed the cancer had returned in her pelvis and spine. She is once again in the fight of her life.

Lily started chemotherapy in March and lost her hair for the second time. This is one of the hardest parts of her journey. For a 10 year old your hair is such an identity. Lily’s dream is to be a country music artist. Due to the overwhelming support of the community during the 1st annual Lily’s Run, Lily, in partnership with Kingdom Kids wanted to continue Lily’s Run to grant wishes for other children also facing challenging circumstances. Lily is an inspiration to all to “pay it forward.”

Bo

Bo was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a highly malignant brain tumor, on Aug. 21, 2009 at the age of 23 month. He underwent numerous surgeries including a brain tumor resection and then full removal of a tumor in Bo’s brain. After the second surgery , doctors said that Bo would then we would precede to proton beam radiation in Jacksonville, Fla. Bo did wonderful with surgery and was even sitting up on the way back from major brain surgery. He had no complications and we were home the next week.

We were so happy they were able to remove all of the tumor and Bo was doing so well. We were ready to move on to radiation. We were having a MRI for Jacksonville a month later when we found the tumor had grown back, and was slightly larger than the one that was just removed. The doctor’s did another MRI a week later and the tumor had doubled in size. Jacksonville called and said it would be better if we did radiation at Emory because Bo would not survive long enough to worry about the major side effects of regular radiation. The doctors originally said that they had never done a surgery so close together and were not sure if they would do it. They all met together and decided that they could. We would be in uncharted territory now. No child had ever done what Bo has done.

After that surgery, Bo started having excruciating headaches. We started pain management and the symptoms stopped. We started radiation, even though he was hurting, because we had to attack this cancer. He is an inspiration to many people, especially his mom and dad. He pushes through these battles with a grace unknown to most. He is still fighting. His latest MRI has shown the spots have shrunk and are waiting on test for a spot on his spine. Just to see his half smile just puts you in awe of the strength of children fighting cancer. We have a saying around Bo’s friend’s and family. If you feel like you can’t do something or just want to give up, think about Bo! “BE BO STRONG!!!!”

***Editors note: On August 15, 2011 Bo went to be with the angels while holding his mommy and daddy’s hands, surrounded by family. With the support of the community from Lily’s Run, Kingdom Kids will be donating a memorial garden to The Story’s backyard for them to reflect on their time with Bo and the lives that he touched during his journey.

McKenna

McKenna was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hepatoblastoma in April 2011 at 18 months old. She must undergo chemotherapy treatments and will eventually need a liver transplant to move towards remission. She just recently finished her 3rd round of chemo and is currently on the liver transplant list. The hope is to have the transplant very soon and then follow up with additional chemo afterwards. McKenna has a 3 ½ year old sister, Samantha…and another sister scheduled to arrive early September.

McKenna is sweet as can be and loves spending time with her family. When she is feeling well, she loves to watch Barney, Elmo and Mickey Mouse. She loves playing with her sister and will immediately start to dance anytime she hears music. McKenna is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face!! McKenna’s wish is to visit Disneyworld with her family, including her newest sibling due in September!

Will

Will Abernathy, age 3 is battling neuroblastoma stage IV cancer. At 31 months, in November 2010, Will’s diagnosis was confirmed. He led a healthy life until he developed symptoms a month prior to diagnosis. While neuroblastoma is the most common childhood cancer, only 1 in 100,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with it each year.

Will has undergone six rounds of chemotherapy at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, plus a tumor resection on his left adrenal gland, a round of outpatient chemo, and numerous ER admissions and blood transfusions. However, since his response has not been what the doctors were hoping for, Will’s treatment plan is taking a different path and he has been sent to CHOP-Children’s Healthcare of Philadelphia to continue treatment with 131I-MIBG therapy offered at only six hospitals in the nation. Will completed his first cycle of 131I-MIBG therapy on May 10, 2011 and MIBG scans performed 7 weeks later showed stable disease with no change.

Will and his family will return to CHOP for a second cycle of 131I-MIBG therapy on June 12, 2011 in hopes that he will go on to respond after two treatments. Will is a brave little soldier and a true joy to everyone in his life, both family and friends. Will’s wish was a trip to the beach with his parents and grandparents. Due to Will’s treatment cycle, The Abernathy enjoyed their wish in July as a result of the 2010 Lily’s Run community support.

Sarah

In August 2009, I rubbed over a lump in Sarah’s leg after sitting down to have a popsicle with her. The thought never entered my mind that it might be cancer! Sarah wasn’t having any pain or feeling sick in any way. She was full of life and excited about moving up to youth group and approaching her 13th birthday. Early tests confirmed that the lump was Ewing’s Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. After that, the whirlwind began. A port was placed and chemo began just two weeks after her first x-ray. From August 2009 to April 2010, Sarah had 14 rounds of inpatient chemotherapy. Extra hospital time came when she was so sick from treatment or when she ran unexpected fevers. Sarah’s biggest surgery was the tumor removal that was done in December 2009. The soft tissue of the tumor and all of the bone that had the tumor in it were removed. A cadaver femur segment replaced hers and a plate held it all together.

Sarah has not walked since the surgery in December 2009 because her bone has not fused with the cadaver bone. Due to the lack of fusion, she had a grafting surgery in July 2011 to try and bring fusion to her leg. We pray that the graft will be successful in fusing those bones so that she can walk again. It will be several months before we will know if the graft worked, and then more recovery and therapy will still be needed. We can’t wait to see her walk and run on two legs again!

In spite of the difficulties of this journey, there is so much to be thankful for! Thankfully, at this time, Sarah’s scans show no evidence of cancer in her body! We have been cared for by the most amazing doctors and nurses at Scottish Rite! We have been blessed to meet and become friends with incredible families that are also in the fight. We received wonderful support throughout the journey. Above all, we have grown closer to God as we learned more about trusting and relying on Him each day.

Jackson

Shortly after birth, Angie & Travis’ son Jackson was diagnosed with a Peroxisomal Disorder, a fatal rare congenital affliction caused by the absence of cell components. In June 2007, at three months old, Jackson underwent two weeks of testing at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. It wasn’t until August that the Jinrights received the diagnosis. There is no cure, and there are few options for significant treatment.

In their online research, the family came across Dr. Manuela Martinez, a pediatrician and biochemist located in Spain. The family worked to get Jackson to her clinic in Barcelona for treatment. The trip lasted six weeks and consisted of daily treatments of a fatty-acid DHA dietary supplement to aid development combined with intense therapy. Within three weeks of treatment he was sitting up and gained weight and was much more active. Jackson has a grueling schedule of therapies — occupational, physical, speech, etc. It’s worked wonders, but won’t bring an end to Jackson’s difficult journey. Indeed, they have seen regression. Jackson has been fitted with a cochlear implant to improve hearing. His sight continues to deteriorate and much of his nourishment now comes via a stomach tube.

In the fall of 2010, Jackson’s doctor in Spain lost her battle with cancer and the Jinright’s were forced to find another doctor that could help their child. They were successful and found Dr. Nancy Braverman in Montreal, who may be the last hope for Jackson and children like him. Still, Jackson stays cheerful and the Sugar Hill family remains hopeful. With help from friends and family, the Jinrights are taking things one day at a time and enjoying every minute spent with Jackson.
